Matt Carter

Carter Mountain Racing

Matt Carter, a Pacific Beach local, was born with the need for speed. Matt grew up racing Motocross, desert and Enduros in Southern California. A burning desire to win motivated him and by age 15 Matt was Western regional high school Motocross champion and National High School Champ the two years to follow. Matt was 4th in the national Amateur Supercross championship in 1978 as well! He started racing in the S.C.O.R.E. BAJA 500 and 1000 at age 16.

Matt turned pro in late 1978 and his passion for winning continued but his career was cut short in 1981when a street bike accident left him severely injured including many head and facial fractures, broken pelvis,
hips, femurs, and ultimately lost his left foot just above the ankle. This did not slow him down for long. In 1983 Matt purchased a 76 F-100, mounted some shocks on it, and started assisting successful off road race teams with pit support and chasing during the grueling Baja 1000 and 500 throughout the 1980s and 90s. Matt’s lust for off road racing was back.

Matt has been raising his two daughters Jennafer and Torre with much help from his mom Leah since 1987, and without his family’s support and commitment, none of this would be possible. In 1998 Matt purchased a class 7 truck in La Paz, Mexico, where he raced with the TECATE, Goodyear, Bradley Racing Team in the southern BAJA championship Series in 1999 and 2000.

In January 2001 Matt brought his entire racing package,(racecar, trailer, chase truck, and a bazillian spare parts) home to San Diego. In February 2001, Matt switched gears. He had been eyeing the Xtreme International Short Course Off Road Series and jumped in head first. By the time the dust had settled, Matt ran away with twelve wins in a row (heats and finals). This awesome year crowned him Xtreme International Overall Points Champion and Class 7 Unlimited Champion as well. Matt went undefeated again in the entire 2002 Xtreme International Series, snatching him the title of Class 7 Unlimited Champion again.

In 2003, Matt promoted a series of short course races in Cajon Speedway in San Diego, building a ¾ mile course inside the Nascar oval. It was dubbed the SORR Winternational Short Course Championship Series, which took the racing to Lake Havasu as well. Matt came away with the Class 7 unlimited Championship in the 2003 Winternational Series as well.

In late ’03 , Matt was invited to Ivan Stewart’s Pro Truck Short Course Champion Race in La Paz, BCS, Mexico. He came away with another victory in Class 7. Matt fell in love with La Paz again. In February 2004, a historical Short Course Race was run at the Victor Gulante baseball stadium in La Paz and he blew them away again!

Recently, Matt won the Corona San Jose Del Cabo Short Course Championship Race and is hungry for more.

From Matt’s first track around his house on Carter Mountain in Pacific Beach to the tip of Baja, Matt’s sizzling ambition to win is growing like wild fire. Keep an eye on our website for future events and of course watch the Win list grow!
